 I went to this exhibit today and it was so fascinating I stayed until the museum closed!

"Hopper Drawing is the first major museum exhibition to focus on the drawings and creative process of Edward Hopper (1882–1967). More than anything else, Hopper’s drawings reveal the continually evolving relationship between observation and invention in the artist’s work, and his abiding interest in the spaces and motifs—the street, the movie theatre, the office, the bedroom, the road—that he would return to throughout his career as an artist. This exhibition showcases the Whitney’s unparalleled collection of Hopper’s work, which includes over 2,500 drawings bequeathed to the museum by his widow Josephine Hopper, many of which have never before been exhibited or researched. The exhibition will survey Hopper’s significant and underappreciated achievements as a draftsman, and will pair many of his greatest oil paintings, including Early Sunday Morning (1930), New York Movie (1939), Office at Night (1940) and Nighthawks (1942), with their preparatory drawings and related works. This exhibition also features groundbreaking archival research into the buildings, spaces and urban environments that inspired his work."

A Joyce Johnson Sighting

This afternoon, at about 4 PM... I entered the #1 subway train station at 18th Street in NYC. I recognized one of the women sitting on a bench with another woman and they were also waiting for the uptown train. I asked: "Joyce?" She looked up and replied: "Yes?" It was Joyce Johnson!

I told her that I heard her speak at Columbia University a few years ago about Jack Kerouac and then I walked further up the platform. I just did not want to intrude.

About a minute later, she and her friend got up from the bench and walked in my direction. I spoke with her for about a minute about Barnard, because my cousin was the president of the Barnard alumni association and then she walked off with her friend. Then, the train came.

I was disappointed I did not have my camera with me... it was a bittersweet moment. Indeed. 

This is a photo I took of Joyce Johnson in February 2011, at Columbia University, when she read from "Visions of Cody."

The Themed Reading Comprehension Kits

The popular and much loved reading comprehension kits are visible in this photo. They were developed around various themes: music, myths, fairy tales, folk tales, sports, and entertainers.

I am trying to find the one called "science fiction." The stories were imaginative, creative, and magical... and inspired my students to improve their reading skills. I am unable to locate any information about the publisher... and I reached a total dead end.
