In about 1960, I went to Lindy's with my father and his friend. They would not seat us because my father was not wearing a jacket, and maybe he also needed to put on a tie. They gave him a "loaner" jacket and then we were seated. He was very embarrassed and that memory sticks with me. They were very snooty in there and had a real attitude. To this day, I remember the coat check girl snickering.
